The Beat – or The English Beat if you prefer

The Beat was one of the wave of 2Tone ska bands that swept the UK at the start of the 1980s.  Unlike The Specials and The Selecter, they didn’t come from Coventry but neighbouring Birmingham.  To English fans, they were always known as The Beat but when they finally broke the United States later in the 80s, they were known as The English Beat – a name that always rankles Brits.

I interviewed Ranking Roger for my book on Specials front man Neville Staple.  He still tours with his son in The Beat but without Dave Wakeling, his co-vocalist.   Here they are performing in the US twenty five years ago and being introduced by two Wayne’s World type presenters.
