Salman Rushdie and cream cakes

In 1980, a TV advertising campaign was run to make sure British people didn’t fall out of love with cream cakes – as if! The slogan was: “Naughty – but nice!” What many people may not know was that the ad executive who came up with this catchy line was none other than embattled and exiled author Salman Rushdie!

Years before coming under a fatwa from Iran for his book The Satanic Verses, Rushdie worked in the advertising industry coining several other corny jingles you might be familiar with. How about “that’ll do nicely” for American Express or “irresistibubble” for Aero chocolate.
